"The Punishment" is the forty-ninth episode of Season 1 of Harvey Beaks.
Synopsis[]
Wracked with guilt over accidentally breaking a plate, Harvey finds a big enough punishment for himself before he loses his mind.
Plot[]
After finishing dinner, Harvey helps his parents out with the dishes. He makes a mad dash to the sink, carrying too many plates at once. Once he makes it to the sink, one of the plates (the one he decorated with a drawing of his family) falls onto the floor and breaks. Harvey starts feeling guilty and wonders what his punishment will be. His parents state that it was just an accident and instead give him a hug, but Harvey is still shaken up.
That night in bed, Harvey has trouble sleeping, still feeling bad about the plate he broke. He goes into his parents’ room and demands that they punish him. However, they are not listening as they are asleep, but are talking while doing so. Harvey thinks they want him to clean the living room as punishment, which he does the next morning. But even after finishing up, he begins to see the plate that he broke in his imagination, and starts feeling guilty again. His parents try tell him it’s no big deal, but Harvey denies it and goes out to find a punishment.
Harvey goes to find his friends, asking them what kind of punishments they get, and they agree to help. Fee goes first, showing him what he does to Foo (who just stole a bucket of shrimp) when he misbehaves. She shows him that she forces Foo to wear formal clothes as punishment and Harvey gives it a try. While the suit does feel uncomfortable, it’s not enough to ease his guilt and he goes to try something else.
He goes to Claire, who’s an expert at dealing with punishments (due to her mother). She tells him that her mom makes her write her failures down on paper and adds it to her collection that she calls the Burden Ball. However, this doesn’t work for Harvey either and he leaves.
Finally, Dade tells him that whenever he gets in trouble, he is forced to eat with all his rambunctious siblings. And once again, this doesn’t work. Harvey then goes over to a river and is about to give up, fearing that he can never show his face again. Which gives him an idea.
Back at Harvey’s house, Miriam and Irving find a video tape that Harvey made (which he taped over his music recital). Upon watching it, they discover that Harvey has decided to run away and go out to find him. Meanwhile, Harvey goes deep into Thornbark to hide in shame. It isn’t long before his parents catch up to him, which causes him to run away even farther, dodging painful obstacles along the way.
Finally, he gets to a big tree and climbs up to the top. His parents ask why he’s doing this, and Harvey responds by saying he still feels guilty about breaking the plate and hopes that climbing to the top of the tree will teach him a lesson. However, his mother tells him that he doesn’t need a punishment and what he has to do is forgive himself and accept that mistakes just happen. Harvey now understands that he needs to let go of his guilt once and for all. Facing the broken plate one last time, Harvey then apologizes and says that he needs to move on. The plate then disappears and Harvey is finally relieved of his guilt.
The Beaks family return home, where Harvey has decorated a new plate and has it protected in a glass case surrounded by lasers so that it doesn’t break this time.
